ProfitMetrics Insights: Visualizing Financial Performance and Sales Analytics

The purpose of this analysis is to help sales managers to identify opportunities to make changes and increase revenue.  Hence, a dashboard was designed to provide, through visual sales metrics and data, a comprehensive view of the sales team's performance. 

 

The dashboard developed in Tableau provides an overview page where key KPIs such as Total Sales, Total Profit and Total Quantity are shown, and a second page where all the order details can be viewed individually.  Besides, on the first page and by analysing the total sales and profit, there is also a section dedicated to the financial evaluation of the states, another section designed for the analysis of the segments and finally, another one for the joint observation of the Managers and Locations.  Finally, for a more detailed overview, the dashboard can be filtered by Region, Category and Ship Mode. 

 

Through this dashboard, company challenges and the changes required to drive sales and profits can be quickly identified. 

GOAL

The main purpose of this dashboard is to provide a comprehensive view of the company's financial performance as well as key metrics and sales data. 

  • Has there been an increase in the number of quantities sold and, therefore, in the Total Sales and Total Profit from 2021 to 2022? 

  • Which states provide the most profit to the company? 

  • Which states have lower sales and profit than the USA average? 

  • What is the distribution of sales in the different regions of the United States? 

  • What is the annual distribution of sales and profit by different segments? 

RESULT

This type of Sales dashboard focused on a general overview of all company data as well as on a detailed view of order details is extremely important for companies as it helps sales managers to identify opportunities to make changes and increase revenue. Besides allowing quick identifying who are the best customers in terms of states or sales segments, it also allows identifying where the challenges are and defining what changes may be needed to increase sales in certain sectors or regions where the company's profit is underwhelming. In addition, it is often useful for forecasting future revenues and acting strategically for better financial performance. In general, it is possible to state that the company's strategy is working properly since there was a significant increase in the number of sales and profits from 2021 to 2022. However, it is still necessary to define strategies to increase profits in the most profit-damaging states as well as to define a plan to increase the performance of the Home Office and Corporate segments. 

INSIGHTS 

Generally in the year 2022 (CY) the number of products sold was always higher compared to the year 2021 (PY). For this reason, there was an increase of 20.36% in total Sales and 14.24% in total Profit. However, these trends were not consistent across all months of the year.

The states of New York and California stand out from the rest of the states in the United States when it comes to Total Sales and Total Profit in 2022. On the other hand, Texas, Illinois, Pennsylvania and North Carolina are the states where production costs are much higher than total revenue.

Over 61% of the states have sales below the US average, while over 67% of the states have profits above the national average.

 

West is the region with the highest total Sales ($250K) while South is the region with the lowest total Sales ($123K).

The Consumer, Corporate and Home Office segments show in CY a total Sales that, in general, will increase throughout the year. However, Consumer is the segment with the highest sales. It is also for this reason that it is the only segment with Profit always positive in all months.
